Author: Captain Chas Henry, USMC (Ret)
Chas Henry is a retired Marine Corps officer, award-winning journalist, and author of Fuji Fire. He served on active duty from 1976 to 1996, rising in rank from private to captain and was decorated for actions in combat during the 1991 Gulf War. After military service, he worked in broadcast journalism covering global security, intelligence, and veterans’ issues. He dedicates his work to preserving Marine Corps history and honoring the sacrifice of those who have served.
Fuji Fire: Sifting Ashes of a Forgotten U.S. Marine Corps Tragedy recounts the 19 October 1979 disaster at Camp Fuji, Japan, when Typhoon Tip triggered a fuel spill that ignited Marine barracks, killing 13 Marines and injuring dozens. Drawing on years of research and survivor interviews, the book examines one of the Corps’ worst peacetime tragedies, honoring the courage, sacrifice, and enduring lessons born from the fire.
