Australia's military has been one of the U.S. Marine Corps' strongest partners in times of trouble since the first World War.  And with just under 80,000 active-duty and reserve personnel, the Australian Defence Force continues to support the Marines in current conflicts, training opportunities and military education endeavors.

This year, Anzac Day, the Australia-New Zealand national day of remembrance, will commemorate 100 years since the end of World War I and will also mark the centenary of Australia and the United States fighting side by side as mates at the Battle of Hamel in July of 1918.

Australian Consul General Chris Oldfield will talk about the significance of these dates to both countries and the legacy of World War I.    
 

Guest Speaker: Chris Oldfield, Australian Consul General

Mr. Chris Oldfield is Consul-General and Senior Trade Commissioner at the Australian Consulate-General in San Francisco. In addition to the consular function, the office is responsible for supporting the growth of two-way trade and investment between the US West Coast and Australia.

Prior to joining Austrade, Mr. Oldfield was the Chief Executive Officer of State-owned Tasmanian Irrigation Pty Ltd (TI) and is a Member of the Joint Commonwealth and Tasmanian Economic Council and a former Member of the Tasmanian Food Industry Advisory Council, the Tasmanian Infrastructure Advisory Council and the Joint Commonwealth and Tasmanian Fruit and Vegetable Industry Taskforce.

Mr. Oldfield is a graduate in Arts from Swinburne University in Melbourne with a major in Sociology and he has also successfully completed the International Executive Program at the European Institute of Business Administration (INSEAD) at Fontainebleau in France. Chris is a member of the Australia Institute of Company Directors and is a former Director of the National Association of Forest Industries, the Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association and the Northern Tasmanian Development Board.

For almost 20 years Mr. Oldfield held senior executive operational and public affairs roles with the Australian resources company, North Limited (formerly North Broken Hill). From 2000 until 2010 Mr. Oldfield successfully owned and managed the public affairs, political and media consultancy, Tasman Communications (Australia) Pty Ltd specializing in the resources, finance, agricultural and action sports sectors. It was during this time that Mr. Oldfield acted as the Chief Executive Officer of the Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association (TFGA) for a period of two years.
